St George’s Day Parade
Despite the slightly damp weather, Sunday 23 April saw a great turn out for the annual gathering of Crawley’s Scout groups, held this year at Goffs Park.
Not only is St George the patron saint of England, but he was also chosen as the patron saint of Scouting by Baden-Powell. It is traditional for Scouts to gather on this day to renew their promise.
1st Crawley’s hut on nearby Oak Road made the perfect departure point for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to make the short parade to Goffs Park. Following a ceremonial parade around the park, flags raised, everyone formed up outside Goffs Park House.
This year we had Crawley’s very own Member of Parliament, Henry Smith MP in attendance to give a few words, along with Mayor, Councillor Jilly Hart and The Rev’d Jamie Gater to give some background to St George.
Finally, all sections took turns to renew their promises, lead by representatives from several different Crawley scout groups. We’ll all be back again next year to renew once more!
